Some food trends flash across the internet and disappear before you’ve even had time to wonder what all the fuss was about. Then there are the rare ones that actually earn a permanent spot in the kitchen. Dalgona whipped coffee is firmly in the second category.
The Backstory
This frothy coffee sensation first exploded across social media in early 2020, though its inspiration reaches back further. The drink takes its name from a popular Korean honeycomb candy called dalgona because the whipped topping resembles the candy’s airy texture and caramel-like color. As people around the world found themselves spending more time at home, videos of fluffy clouds of whipped coffee piling high over milk quickly became irresistible. Before long, everyone seemed to be reaching for instant coffee and a whisk.
It’s easy to see why Dalgona coffee became such a captivating trend. There’s something oddly satisfying about watching a handful of simple ingredients transform into a thick, glossy foam. It’s equal parts science experiment, café-worthy treat, and kitchen entertainment. Even after the novelty wears off, the result is genuinely delicious.

The Taste
The taste is a wonderful contrast of bold and creamy. The whipped coffee has an intense coffee flavor with a hint of sweetness, while the cold milk softens every sip into something smooth and refreshing. Stir it together before drinking, or enjoy the dramatic layers for a moment first. Either way, every glass feels a little more special than your everyday cup.
One of the best things about Dalgona coffee is how surprisingly easy it is to make. Whether you whip it together with a hand mixer, stand mixer, or simply a mixing bowl and a whisk, the ingredients come together with very little effort. Watching the mixture thicken into soft, fluffy peaks is almost as rewarding as drinking it.

Options
Another bonus is how easily you can customize it. Traditional dairy milk works beautifully, but almond, oat, soy, coconut, or any favorite non-dairy milk is just as delicious. You can even adjust the sweetness to suit your taste, making every glass your own.
Will Dalgona whipped coffee completely replace your morning brew? Maybe not. But don’t be surprised if it becomes your favorite afternoon pick-me-up or your go-to coffee when you want something a little more fun. Sometimes the simplest recipes have the biggest impact, and this internet-famous coffee might change the way you drink your coffee in the future. At the very least, it’s proof that a little whisking can go a long way—and that some viral recipes really are worth all the hype.
