When I was a kid, I wanted to be the President, a lawyer, and Martha Stewart–in that order. I gave up on the Presidency once I learned the odds. I remained focused on law school until I worked as a paralegal and married a lawyer instead. I ended up in culinary school and although I […]
It’s a terrible habit, but there are many days I don’t eat breakfast. In fairness, I’m not super hungry first thing in the morning. In a perfect world, I would probably eat breakfast at 10 am; but life is busy and that’s not going to happen. For my boys, who always get up super early, […]
Simple, easy, hearty overnight quinoa is a great, slightly less heavy, alternative to overnight oats. Also a make-ahead breakfast, overnight quinoa is appealing to anyone who likes to plan for a busy day. Quinoa is vastly popular, personally, I love the stuff, but I needed to do a little bit of research to understand exactly […]
Granola is like candy to me, I seriously love the stuff, but only when it is freshly made and not too sweet. There are a few great things about making your granola. Despite what people think, it is straightforward to do and it is extremely adaptable. Store-bought granola is always so sweet and, to me, […]

In the world of breakfast bliss, few delights rival the vibrant allure of an Açaí smoothie bowl. With more than 410,000 Instagram posts, “avocado toast” is no longer just a fad. Nor are people just eating it for breakfast: it’s also being served for lunch and as a snack and has become a go-to alternative to grilled cheese for kids and grownups alike. Avocado toast has staying power, most likely due to […]
Overnight oats have become extremely popular. I can understand why. This easy, no-cook breakfast alternative is simple to throw together the night before and can be adapted to meet anyone’s preferences. Typically, overnight oats incorporate equal parts raw rolled oats and sometimes nut milk, cow milk, or yogurt. You can add your favorite fresh or […]
Smoothies (a category that includes protein shakes) are thick beverages made from blended raw fruit or vegetables with other ingredients such as water, ice, dairy products, or sweeteners. I was late to the smoothie fad. While smoothies were popular in the early 1990s, they have been around a lot longer than that, in particular on the […]
Everyone needs a good basic waffle recipe on hand for Sunday mornings. Buttermilk waffles, the epitome of breakfast indulgence, owe their magic to a tangy, creamy secret: buttermilk. This acidic marvel not only imparts a subtle tang but also tenderizes the batter, resulting in irresistibly light and fluffy waffles. Buttermilk’s Brilliance The acidity in buttermilk […]
I have never loved yogurt. It was not the texture or tartness; to me, yogurt has always been too sweet. And then I went to Iceland… Greek yogurt started a whole thick-and-creamy yogurt trend. Fage introduced their yogurt to the market in the late 90’s. By the early 2000s, it was all the rage. Greek […]
Welcome to my blog Simmer + Sauce. I always thought I was going to be a lawyer, but going to culinary school was one of the best decisions I ever made. I’m a former professional chef from NYC who loves to eat, cook and talk about food. My focus is great food, with solid recipes and reasonable ingredient lists. Cooking should be enjoyable, not stressful. Many of my recipes are family friendly and often on the healthy(ish) side.
